BIO:

Joe Carr was born to a white middle class Catholic family in Kansas City, Missouri in 1981. He spent his childhood doing professional and community theatre, & struggled socially to fit in.  At Center High School (60% non-white), he became an environmental and human rights activist. He graduated in 2000 & attended the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. There, he studied performing arts & social sciences, & organized with the Evergreen Animal Rights Network, Evergreen Students Against Sweatshops, Evergreen Political Information Center, Earth First!, Food Not Bombs!, & co-founded Carnival! Evergreen's Political Arts Collective.

He spent January to April of 2003 coordinating for the International Solidarity Movement in Rafah, Palestine, & witnessed Israeli soldiers murder US peace activist Rachel Corrie, & British activist Tom Hurndall. He returned to the states and did a school exchange program with Grinnell College in Iowa & studied social movement theory & history. He graduated with a BA from Evergreen in 2004.

He then became a full-time activist with the Christian Peacemaker Teams and spent three months in At-Tuwani, a Palestinian village struggling to survive Israeli violence and settlement expansion. In January 2005, he released his first album "Plant the Olive Branch", and did a two-month speaking tour of the Mid-West. Israel denied him entry that April, so he spent a month in Iraq organizing with anti-occupation activists in Baghdad, Karballa, and Fallujah.  He resigned from CPT in September, 2005 but continued organizing nonviolent resistance to the Israeli occupation in Palestine with the International Solidarity Movement until November, 2005.

He is now back in the US and just released his second album, "Resistance to Empire" and is on a two-month speaking/organizing tour of the Mid-West. He plans to settle in Lawrence, KS in April to do community organizing & continue working nationally for justice in the Middle East.

STATEMENT OF IDENTITY:

I am a white, middle class, male-identified United States citizen. I primarily date women but I am not straight. I am an anti-racist & anti-sexist; I seek to dismantle racist & patriarchal systems of privilege & end my own oppressive behaviors. I was raised Catholic, but I am independently spiritual.  I am an anarchist; I seek to tear down hierarchies in my personal interactions, organizing structures, & society at large. I am a revolutionary; this US-dominated global capitalist system is inherently flawed & I aim to help accelerate its inevitable collapse & create a truly sustainable & egalitarian society. I work for peace in my personal interactions and I oppose all wars waged by governments to ensure their dominance. I find nonviolent resistance tactics powerful and effective,  but violence & property destruction have always been an essential part of revolutionary movements &  I support everyone's right to self defense.

I call on everyone benefiting from unearned privileges to stand up and support poor people of color around the world demanding an end to oppression! Unite for global justice!

in peace, love, & anarchy
