WASHINGTON – May 23, 2008 - The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) and Burger King Corp. (NYSE:BKC) today announced plans to work together to improve wages and working conditions for the farmworkers who harvest tomatoes for the BURGER KING® system in Florida.

BKC has agreed to pay an additional net penny per pound for Florida tomatoes to increase wages for the Florida farm workers who harvest tomatoes. To encourage grower participation in this increased wage program, BKC will also fund incremental payroll taxes and administrative costs incurred by the growers as a result of their farmworkers' increased wages, or a total of 1.5 cents per pound of tomatoes.

South Dakota: Souix Anti-Hog Farm Protest Attacked by Police

 by Prophecy, Antithesis

There is a protest going on right now as we speak in Marty, South Dakota
home of the Ihanktowan aka Yankton Sioux. There have been multiple
arrests, including minors, as protesters seek to block front loader
bulldozers from breaking ground on a new pig farm that will be occupied by
thousands of pigs and their waste near a Head Start Program filled with
Native children. A man was struck by the metal scoop of the front loader
(which is used to excavate tons of dirt) and was medically evacuated by
ambulance.

Around noon on April 12, almost 60 people gathered in Lawrence, Kansas to voice a resounding NO! to the exploitation of farmworkers in the fields of South Florida and to conditions of modern day slavery. Protesters gathered in front of the Memorial Union at the University of Kansas, where they marched, biked, danced and sang through campus towards the Burger King restaurant on the corner of 23rd Street and Naismith Drive. They demonstrated in support of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers's national campaign against Burger King's unjust treatment of tomato pickers.

Kansas City Unites Against the Minutemen

5 February, 2008

“No More Minutemen” we chanted as we marched down Broadway. “Get out your Green cards, ICE is coming” they shouted at us, interrupting our freedom songs. Though only a street in between us, our ideologies were worlds apart. But it was clear who spoke the loudest.

Their eyes were piercingly honest
Expressions so vivid I could see through their masks
These people know true struggle
True pain, true joy
It is nearly impossible to hide a lie in your eyes
Lies bread fear
So in this sense
They are fearless

I finally made it to Chiapas.

June 14, 2007

For the fourth year in a row, Palestinian rights activists made Caterpillar’s sales to Israel the number one issue during their annual shareholders meeting in Chicago. Because of previous demonstrations, this year’s meeting was moved from downtown to Chicago to an hour outside the city in a secure complex called the Q Center. Using disruptive action, activists forced the meeting to end 20 minutes early.

Tornado Ravaged Greensburg, Kansas: Kansas Mutual Aid Relief Workers forced out of city by police Saturday
May 19, 2007
by Dave Strano

On Saturday May 19, five members and volunteers affiliated with Kansas Mutual Aid, a Lawrence based class struggle anarchist collective, made the trek back to Greensburg to again help in relief efforts in the tornado ravaged city. A week earlier, four KMA members had traveled to Greensburg on a fact finding mission to assess the situation there. What KMA members found was a militarized, entirely destroyed city where relief efforts were moving tragically slow. Today, we were forcfully removed from the city and told we'd be arrested on side if we returned.

 From Fallujah to Greensburg
By Joe Carr

5-12-2007

I spent last Saturday in Greensburg, KS, and I can barely describe the devastation I saw there. I wish that I could say I’ve never seen anything like it, but the destruction and official response was hauntingly similar to what I witnessed in Palestine and Iraq during my trips there from 2003-2005.

Keeping the Pressure On: Lawrence anarchists fight against Military Recruitment

by Dave Strano, Kansas Mutual Aid

During a counter-recruitment protest outside of the Lawrence Army/Navy
Career Center on Saturday December 16th, the small group of us that had
showed up were confronted by a Naval officer. The sailor introduced
himself as being an acting supervisor of U.S. Naval recruitment for the
Kansas and Missouri area. He proceeded to have a 45 minute discussion with
us about our counter-recruitment efforts, police enforcement, life in the
military, and the war in Iraq.

Lawrence Recruitment Center Littered with Names of Dead

LAWRENCE, KS- Today at approximately 4pm, a group of six Lawrence
community members entered the U.S. Marine Recruitment Center at the 23rd
and Louisiana shopping center.

They proceeded to empty large bags containing slips of paper all over the
office. The slips of paper listed the names and other information of
Iraqis and U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq. There were around 3500 names on
pieces of paper, which covered most of the center’s floor.
